JAMES ORFORD

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

James joined Lombard in an executive capacity in January 2015, and was appointed to the role of managing director in June 2015. He has been a non-executive director of the Lombard group since 2011. From 2010 to 2014, James was a finance executive at Yellowwoods Ventures Investments. He has 18 years of institutional investment experience. MPhil (Econ), BBusSci (Econ), CFA.

DOMINIQUE DONALDSON

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

A seasoned accounting professional, Dominique joined Lombard’s finance department in March 2010. She completed articles at Deloitte where she obtained her CA (SA). She holds a BA LLB from the University of Stellenbosch and completed her GDA at the University of Cape Town.

IAN GATLEY

HEAD OF DATA MANAGEMENT

Ian joined lombard in 2013 as head of business intelligence and was appointed to head of data management in 2015. He has more than 16 years of experience in it strategy, big data and analytics, technology and data management. His qualifications include a MBA (Wits) and a BSC in information technology management.

DOUG LABURN

PARTNERSHIPS

Doug Laburn joined Lombard in 2010 and took on his role as head of Partnerships in 2014. Doug has extensive experience across the supply chain and insurance industries, and holds a B Eng (Stellenbosch) and MBA (Oxford).

ILONA POONAN

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT

Ilona started her career in consulting and joined Lombard Insurance in 2009 in our People Development Division. She has a BComm and an Honours degree through the University of Witwatersrand and a Master’s Degree in Management through the Wits Business School.

JOHNNY SYMMONDS

INTERNATIONAL BONDING

Johnny has more than 20 years of financial institution experience and was the MD of Lombard for 11 years. He moved to head up our International Bonding division in July 2015, managing the
group’s global bonding strategy. He is a Chartered Accountant – CA (SA) – and holds a BComm. (Hons).

STEPHEN VIVIAN

CHIEF RISK OFFICER, GENERAL LEGAL COUNSEL AND COMPANY SECRETARY

Stephen joined Lombard in 2009 as the Group Company Secretary and General Legal Counsel. Stephen has a BCom, LLB and is also an admitted attorney, notary and non-practising Solicitor of England and Wales. Furthermore, Stephen is a board certified compliance officer, accredited with the Compliance Institute of South Africa, having managed the Compliance Risks of Lombard’s Life company. He has recently taken over the role of Chief Risk Officer for the Group.

GARETH NEILSON

CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER

Gareth has extensive experience in the field of finance and investments. He joined Lombard Insurance in September 2015 as a Business and Strategy Analyst and was recently appointed as Chief Investment Officer. Gareth is a Chartered Accountant – CA (SA) and completed his articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He also holds a Bachelor of Accounting (Wits).

MILES JAPHET

CHAIRMAN

Our chairman, Miles Japhet, is a seasoned insurance professional with an entrepreneurial vision. He has over 30 years’ insurance experience and has served on boards of a number of Short and Long-Term insurance companies in Southern Africa, Pakistan, Gibraltar and England.

As a founding member of Hollard, Miles held the position of chief executive of the Hollard Group before joining Lombard. He has been the Chairman of Lombard Insurance Company for the last 18 years and was appointed to the Lombard Board in 1995. Miles holds a BSC (Hons) (Bristol) in Economics and Politics and has an ACII.

CONRAD BACKEBERG

NON-EXECUTIVE

Conrad was the Managing director of MS Life from 2000 to 2006, after which he held the position of Managing Director of RGA Reinsurance until March 2009. Since October 2009, he has been serving as an independent non-executive director at a number of companies, including some within the Lombard Insurance Group. He has been an independent Non-Executive Director of Lombard Life since October 2009 and of Lombard Insurance Company since November 2011. Conrad has a BSC (Hons) (UCT). FIA, FASSA.

BERT CARLIN

NON-EXECUTIVE

Bert has more than 23 years’ experience as a director in the insurance sector, with board positions at Hollard and group companies. He was appointed to the Lombard Board on16 November 1995, and is a non-executive independent member of the Audit Committee. Bert is a CA(SA).

ATHI MAGWENTSHU

NON-EXECUTIVE

Athi, a qualified quantity surveyor, started his career in the construction industry, joining ABSA in 2003 as part of the property finance team. He has since been involved in the real estate sector in various capacities including financier, and involved in investment and new developments. Athi holds an MBA and is an independent non-executive director of JSE listed Tower Property Fund where he chairs its investment committee.

ANDREW PIENAAR

NON-EXECUTIVE

Andrew joined the Lombard Board in 2015.  He has 14 years’ experience in the financial services sector, mainly in investment banking and private equity. Andrew is an investment executive at Yellowwoods Ventures Investments. CA(SA), CFA.
