JAMES ORFORD

MANAGING DIRECTOR

James was appointed to the role of managing director of the Lombard group in June 2015, having served as a non-executive director from 2011. From 2010 to 2014, James was a finance executive at Yellowwoods Ventures Investments, an insurance-focused investment office based in Johannesburg. He has more than 20 years of institutional investment experience across a wide range of asset classes, and has worked in New York, London, Sao Paulo and Bogota. He holds an MPhil in Economics from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, and a BBusSci with first class honours in Economics from the University of Cape Town.

DOMINIQUE DONALDSON

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

A seasoned accounting professional, Dominique joined Lombard’s finance department in March 2010. She completed articles at Deloitte where she obtained her CA (SA). She holds a BA LLB from the University of Stellenbosch and completed her GDA at the University of Cape Town.

DOUG LABURN

PARTNERSHIPS

Doug Laburn joined Lombard in 2010 and took on his role as head of Partnerships in 2014. Doug has extensive experience across the supply chain and insurance industries, and holds a B Eng (Stellenbosch) and MBA (Oxford).

ILONA POONAN

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT

Ilona started her career in consulting and joined Lombard Insurance in 2009 in our People Development Division. She has a BComm and an Honours degree through the University of Witwatersrand and a Master’s Degree in Management through the Wits Business School.

STEPHEN VIVIAN

CHIEF RISK OFFICER, GENERAL LEGAL COUNSEL AND COMPANY SECRETARY

Stephen joined Lombard in 2009 as the Group Company Secretary and General Legal Counsel. Stephen has a BCom, LLB and is also an admitted attorney, notary and non-practising Solicitor of England and Wales. Furthermore, Stephen is a board certified compliance officer, accredited with the Compliance Institute of South Africa, having managed the Compliance Risks of Lombard’s Life company. He has recently taken over the role of Chief Risk Officer for the Group.

GARETH NEILSON

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Gareth has extensive experience in the field of finance and investments. He joined Lombard Insurance in September 2015 as a Business and Strategy Analyst and was recently appointed as Chief Financial Officer. Gareth is a Chartered Accountant – CA (SA) and completed his articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He also holds a Bachelor of Accounting (Wits).

THANE DUFFIN

LOMBARD GUARANTEE

Thane joined Lombard in 2001 to establish a Trade Credit Insurance Business. Since then Thane has led many initiatives within the Guarantee and Trade Credit businesses, where he is still the Executive Manager responsible. He has over 20 years’ experience in the industry and holds a BCOM degree from University of Witwatersrand.

Barry Dickson

Chief Technology Officer

Barry has an entrepreneurial passion within technology that has led to a focus on data to ensure integrated intelligence enabling business success. He joined Lombard Insurance in May 2019 as the Chief Technology Officer. Barry holds a BSC Honours (Information Systems).

MILES JAPHET

CHAIRMAN

Our chairman, Miles Japhet, is a seasoned insurance professional with an entrepreneurial vision.  He has over 40 years insurance experience and has served on the boards of a number of Short and Long-Term insurance companies in South Africa, Mozambique, Pakistan, Gibraltar and England.

As a founding member of Hollard in 1980, Miles held the position of Chief Executive of the Hollard Group from 1985 to 1998. He has been the Chairman of Lombard Insurance Company for the last 18 years and was originally appointed to the Lombard Board in 1995. He holds a BSC (Hons) (Bristol) in Economics and Politics and has an AC11.

CONRAD BACKEBERG

NON-EXECUTIVE

Conrad was the Managing director of MS Life from 2000 to 2006, after which he held the position of Managing Director of RGA Reinsurance until March 2009. Since October 2009, he has been serving as an independent non-executive director at a number of companies, including some within the Lombard Insurance Group. He has been an independent Non-Executive Director of Lombard Life since October 2009 and of Lombard Insurance Company since November 2011. Conrad has a BSC (Hons) (UCT). FIA, FASSA.

BERT CARLIN

NON-EXECUTIVE

Bert has more than 30 years’ experience as a director in the insurance sector, with board positions at Hollard and group companies. He has been a non-executive independent member of the Lombard Board since his appointment on 16 November 1995. He is the Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committees, as well as of the Capital Management and Investment Committee. Bert is a CA(SA).

ATHI MAGWENTSHU

NON-EXECUTIVE

Athi, a qualified quantity surveyor, started his career in the construction industry, joining ABSA in 2003 as part of the property finance team. He has since been involved in the real estate sector in various capacities including financier, and involved in investment and new developments. Athi holds an MBA and is an independent non-executive director of JSE listed Tower Property Fund where he chairs its investment committee.

ANDREW PIENAAR

NON-EXECUTIVE

Andrew joined the Lombard Board in 2015.  He has 19 years’ experience in the financial services sector, mainly in investment banking and private equity. Andrew is an investment executive at Yellowwoods Ventures Investments. CA(SA), CFA.

JOHNNY SYMMONDS

INSURETY MANAGING DIRECTOR

Johnny has more than 20 years of financial institution experience and was the CEO of Lombard for 11 years. He moved to head our International Guarantee and Surety divisions in July 2015 and in 2018 to head Insurety, the alliance of surety players that includes Lombard, Nordic Guarantee and Assetinsure. Insurety operates in South Africa, Europe and Australia and is responsible for the global strategy of these businesses.

He is a Chartered Accountant – CA (SA) – and holds a BComm. (Hons).
